An Illinois Lincoln Highway Tidbit

things to do in IllinoisHappy Birthday to Illinois Lincoln Highway native, Cindy Crawford. Born and raised in DeKalb, Illinois, Cynthia Ann “Cindy” Crawford celebrates 47 today. Crawford was discovered at the age of 16 by a newspaper photographer who noticed her at work during her summer job of de-tasseling corn. Crawford graduated from DeKalb High School in 1984, as valedictorian and won an academic scholarship to study chemical engineering at Northwestern University, which she attended only for one quarter before dropping out to pursue a full-time modeling career. Crawford has since adorned hundreds of magazine covers throughout her career and her success at modeling has made her an international celebrity that has led to roles in television and film.

A Special Evening of Wine & Food

illinois wineWhile you can always dine well along the Illinois Lincoln Highway, This Friday, February 15, 2013, four of the best winemakers in Illinois are gathering at August Hill Winery along the Illinois Lincoln Highway to create a unique culinary experience that showcases some of the greatest wines that Illinois produces! You will depart from the August Hill Winery tasting room at 6 pm and then ride the Trolley to the winery and caves. Then you will enjoy an opening toast and introduction to the winemakers before dining on a six-course gourmet meal prepared by Chef Rina from The Bistro. Each course is exquisitely paired with two stylistically different wines from two winemakers – 1 gal and 1 guy. “Her wine” and “His wine” – whose is best? You get to vote for the guys or the gals in this entertaining dinner.

Here’s a sneak peak at the menu:

Course 1: Appetizer:  Asparagus wrapped in puff pastry and shrimp with salsa

Course 2: Soup: Fire roasted red peppers & smoked gouda bisque

Course 3: Fish: Ginger poached salmon w/ lime basil cream on top of peanut butter soba noodles

Course 4: Pork: Pecan bacon wrapped pork medallions drizzled w/ sauce (chocolate, habaneras, or wine/port)

Course 5: Salad: Mixed greens or herbs with a lime cilantro dressing

Coarse 6: Chocolate Meringue Kisses and/or Balsamic Strawberries w/ cream
