John Deere Historic Site: Experience the sights, sounds and feel the heat in the working replica of John Deere’s blacksmith shop.  Visit the house that John Deere built, explore artifacts found during an archaeological dig that uncovered the location of John Deere’s original blacksmith shop. Open seasonally, May through October, Wednesday through Sunday.

Learn the kayaking basics and go on a nature tour of the Fox River. This is a fantastic kayaking class for a first timer or a refresher for those who have kayaked before. We will teach you ACA certified level 1 kayaking strokes such as forward, reverse, turning sweep, and more. The kayaking class begins with 30 minutes of instruction, on land, and is followed by an hour of kayaking on the Fox River. After the class, the group will take a kayaking trip on the Fox River. There is a wide array of wildlife along this stretch of the Fox River, including Egrets, White and Blue Herons, Kingfishers, and other birds or deer. “Lou Henry Hoover and Her Cross Country Journey”

The Volunteer Millers will host Archivist from Herbert Hoover Presidential Library, Craig Wright. Mr. Wright will talk about President Hoover’s wife, Lou Henry Hoover and the travels she took throughout her life. He will focus on her own illustrated scrapbooks and comments about the trips. Her interesting life story includes her cross country car trip in 1921, more than 3,700 miles through the back roads of America, and traveling around the world five times. The 2013 program series coordinates with this year’s tourism theme for Fulton: “Lincoln Highway Centennial 1913-2013: Travel & Tribute.”
Since 2004, Wright has been an archivist at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library in West Branch, Iowa. Prior to that, he served as the curator at the Minnesota Historical Society. He has spoken at conferences throughout the Midwest as well as conducted numerous workshops. Although he serves as a specialist in digitization efforts at the Hoover Library, he is also a cataloger, answers reference questions, and works closely with students and teachers. The event will be held at the Windmill Cultural Center, and is free and open to the public.  Refreshments will be served following the presentation. The facility is accessible to persons with disabilities.

King Kat Fishing Tournament

The 5th Annual King Kat Tournament in Dixon is the Biggest and Best Catfish Tournament Trail put on by Cabela’s and King Kat USA.  The 2013 event is sponsored by Dixon Tourism, KSB Hospital, Ace Hardware and the City of Dixon. Registration forms are available at the Dixon Welcome Center and Ace Hardware in Dixon or at the website below.
On Tournament day, June 8th, teams can fish on the Rock River from the Steel Mill Dam at Milan to the Dam at Oregon for $10,000 in prize money.  The purse is one of the national catfish tourney’s largest.  Fishing begins at 6:30am and goes till 3:30pm and Anglers must be in line for weigh in by 4:00pm. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy the day as fisherman check-in from 11:00am-4:00pm at Page Park drive along the beautiful Rock River.  Food will be available for purchase at Page Park from 11:00am-end of event, courtesy of Dixon Junior Dukes.

Get out and have some fun at Biking with Beanzie! This is a recreational ride presented by Kishwaukee Kiwanis Club of DeKalb and sponsored by Kishwaukee Community Hospital. The route consists of primarily flat rural roads with some rolling terrain with estimated ride options of 20 miles, 40 miles, 60 miles, 80 miles and 101 miles. Past rides have gone through scenic Lake Shabbona State Park and the Lee County windmill farm. All roads are well-paved, lightly traveled and posted with signs containing ride information and bits of Beanzie humor. This year also includes 3-mile and 5-mile Community Bicycle Pathway route options. BWB is partnering with Pioneering Healthier Communities initiative to help promote a healthier lifestyle within DeKalb County.
